United States' regulatory approved pharmacotherapies for nuclear reactor explosions and anthrax-associated bioterrorism
Expert Opin Drug Saf. 2023 Aug 18:1-6. doi: 10.1080/14740338.2023.2245748. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Nuclear reactor incidents and bioterrorism outbreaks are concerning public health disasters. Little is known about US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved agents that can mitigate consequences of these events. We review FDA data supporting regulatory approvals of these agents.AREAS COVERED: We reviewed pharmaceutical products approved to treat Hematopoietic Acute Radiation Syndrome (H-ARS) and to treat or prevent pulmonary infections following Bacillus anthracis (anthrax) exposure. Four drugs were a...

Treponema pallidum genome sequencing from six continents reveals variability in vaccine candidate genes and dominance of Nichols clade strains in Madagascar
PLoS Negl Trop Dis. 2021 Dec 22;15(12):e0010063. doi: 10.1371/journal.pntd.0010063. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn spite of its immutable susceptibility to penicillin, Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum) subsp. pallidum continues to cause millions of cases of syphilis each year worldwide, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality and underscoring the urgency of developing an effective vaccine to curtail the spread of the infection. Several technical challenges, including absence of an in vitro culture system until very recently, have hampered efforts to catalog the diversity of strains collected worldwide. Here, we p...

Integrated Multi-omics, Virtual Screening and Molecular Docking Analysis of Methicillin-Resistant < em > Staphylococcus aureus < /em > USA300 for the Identification of Potential Therapeutic Targets: An In-Silico Approach
In this study, staphylococcal FemA protein (P0A0A5) is subjected to structure-based virtual screening for the drug repurposing approach. There are 20 residues missing in the crystal structure of FemA, and 12 of these residues are located at the catalytic site. The missing residues are modelled, and stereochemistry is checked. FDA approved drugs available in the DrugBank database have been used in virtual screening with FemA in search of potential repurposed molecules. This approach provides us with 10 drugs that may be used in the treatment of methicillin-resistant staphylococcal mediated diseases. AutoDock 4.2 is used for...

Top 20 Research Studies of 2020 for Primary Care Physicians
This article summarizes the top 20 research studies of 2020 identified as POEMs (patient-oriented evidence that matters), including the two most highly rated guidelines of the year on gout and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Regarding COVID-19, handwashing and social distancing through stay-at-home orders or quarantine measures are effective at slowing the spread of illness. Use of proper face masks (not gaiters or bandanas) is also effective at preventing trans- mission. This is important because the virus can infect others during the presymptomatic phase. Aspirin can no longer be recommended for the primary...
